Chaffee - Chaffee City Council has voted to put 24-cent park tax increase on April municipal ballot over objection of one council member, Jerry Wolsey of Ward 1; tax increase would help make up $30,000 park budget deficit now covered by city's general revenue.

25 years ago: Feb. 10, 1977

Dongola, Ill. - Twenty-six cars of southbound Illinois Central Gulf freight train derail early in morning on south edge of Dongola; cargo carried on overturned cars includes potatoes, salt, fuel oil, empty 105-millimeter artillery shell casings, iron ore and coal; no one is injured in accident.

Jimmy S. Bollinger member of faction which maintains it wants to clean up operation of Laborers Local 282, says that meeting of members scheduled for Saturday morning will be held despite announcement it has been canceled; he says neither executive board nor new officers of local are authorized to cancel meeting, because local is required to hold regular meetings second Saturday of each month.

50 years ago: Feb. 10, 1952

Thirty-one guest ministers fill pulpits of Methodist churches within district in morning, as United Evangelistic Mission of Methodist Churches in Cape Girardeau gets under way; Bishop Ivan Lee Holt of St. Louis arrived yesterday and that evening addressed Methodist youth of district at large youth rally at Centenary Methodist Church; about 500 young people and their friends attended rally, coming from Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid and Cape Girardeau counties.

Dr. John W. Berry, 80, veteran physician of Cape Girardeau, died yesterday at home of son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Rowe G. Baker at Tomahawk, Wis., following illness of five years; Berry was born near Fulton; he married Minnie L. Stolle in Portland, Mo., in October 1912, after which they moved to Cape Girardeau where he opened office; Berry retired in 1947 because of failing health.

75 years ago: Feb. 10, 1927

City Council, by two to one vote, adopts new dog ordinance, providing for registration of all canines within city; there is no provision in ordinance for restraining of registered animals.

Fred A. Keller, progressive farmer of near Cape Girardeau, has been appointed by County Court as member of Cape Special Road District Commission, succeeding H.L. Siemers, who asked to be relieved after serving on commission nine years.
