Heeding last-minute pleas from restaurant owners in one case and a developer in another, the Cape Girardeau City Council votes down restaurant tax-extension and stormwater measures.

Black residents of Cape Girardeau have presented to the city council "An Appeal for Human Rights," in which they cite a number of grievances and suggest some solutions; among grievances listed are substandard housing and restricted access to public facilities, such as hotels, motels and nursing homes.

Edgar F. Huhn, who watched a revolution occur in the shoe industry since his start with the International Shoe Co. plant here April 26, 1912, retires as manager of the Cape Girardeau sub-office of United Shoe Machinery Corp.

1938

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Assembled sportsmen last night heard John Soutiea, district conservation agent, discuss preliminary plans for a bobcat hunt, scheduled for Feb. 11; hunters from Scott, Cape Girardeau, Stoddard and Bollinger counties will participate in the first of four hunts.

Three more young men from the area have been accepted as applicants for enlistment by the naval recruiting station here; they are John Wilkinson of Cape Girardeau, Howard Hagan of Perryville, Mo., and Ralph Johnson of Chaffee, Mo..

1913

If reports circulating are true, Cape Girardeau's most prominent corner will be turned into the location of a saloon; it is said that the room now occupied by the Boston Grocery Store, at the northwest corner of Broadway and Main, has been leased for saloon purposes.

The Houck Railroad has purchased 10 acres of land adjoining its depot tract in the northeast part of Farmington, Mo.; it will be used for switching and terminal purposes.
