50 years ago: Feb. 1, 1960

Harry "Nick" Carter, 34, owner and operator of Carter Cab Co., has filed his petition with the city clerk for commissioner; he is the ninth person to file for the nomination.

Petitions asking for another election on the consolidation of Fornfelt and Ancell are filed with the Scott County Court by a committee from the Boosters Club of both towns; the court says the election will be called for Feb. 26.

75 years ago: Feb. 1, 1935

Brick is being laid for the walls of the Sinclair Oil Co.'s new super-service station at Broadway and Main Street; the building will be 47 feet long and 24 feet wide; the outside of the structure will be covered with stucco.

Commanding officers at Camp Delta, the Civilian Conservation Corps camp near McClure, Ill., say the shifting of supply purchasing from Cape Girardeau to Southern Illinois towns is probably only temporary; the camp spends about $4,000 per month.

100 years ago: Feb. 1, 1910

Nearly a thousand people heard the concert of the St. Louis Symphony orchestra last night at the Normal School auditorium; all of them may not have fully understood the music, as it was rather too classical for all, but they enjoyed it.

The steamer Ferd Herold, on its first trip of the 1910 season, goes north in the morning, arriving at Cape Girardeau at 8:35 and departing at 9:15; the boat is transporting a large cargo of hogs, having picked up porkers at several landings.
