There will be no merger of the Chaffee, Mo., and Delta school districts, at least not in the near future; while the measure passed in Chaffee, 624-372, it failed in Delta yesterday, 499-104.

Incumbents James F. Hirsch and Catherine Otto easily won re-election to the Cape Girardeau Board of Education yesterday, defeating challenger John Sarff.

50 years ago: April 6, 1958

The observation of Easter began last night with the Easter Vigil Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral; the main celebrant was the Most Rev. Charles H. Helmsing, bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau; he was assisted by Monsignor Marion F. Forst, the Revs. Robert A. Schumacher and J. Ralph Duffner, and the Rev. Mr. Franklin Schmittzehe.

Preceded by a severe wind and hailstorm yesterday, Easter in Cape Girardeau is on the blustery side, with a light shower in the afternoon and cloudy skies all day.

75 years ago: April 6, 1933

With the legalization of 3.2 percent beer tonight, a few retailers in Cape Girardeau may be in a position to offer it for sale by noon tomorrow; plans are to have at least two truck loaded out for Cape Girardeau at St. Louis breweries at midnight, and some of it may be cooled and ready for sale by noon Friday.

Unless those who have accounts at the Sturdivant Bank file their claims by closing time Saturday, they will be denied participation in whatever payment is made to depositors when the bank has liquidated; claims covering $89,923.99 in checking accounts, time deposits, savings accounts, Christmas club accounts, cashier's checks and outstanding drafts haven't been filed.

100 years ago: April 6, 1908

Professor W.S. Dearmont and R.B. Oliver addressed a fair crowd at the Jackson courthouse Saturday on local option; in the course of his remarks, Dearmont assured the audience that Cape Girardeau will soon go dry; he believes saloons there will be voted out.

The Juden School closed Friday after a successful term, at least the last three months, taught by Dorcas F. Asher; Asher as a school teacher cannot be recommended too highly; she has been asked to teach the school again next year.
