25 years ago: March 22, 1983

The city of Jackson is seeking a community development block grant to finance a proposed $184,135 project for housing rehabilitation, construction of storm sewers and street improvement in a six-block area, generally bounded by Washington, Mary and Missouri streets.

Judges for the 27th annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair inspect 149 exhibits in the ballroom of the University Center and select winners by category, plus special awards; the fair will conclude Friday.

50 years ago: March 22, 1958

The George L. Cousins construction firm of St. Louis was the apparent low bidder for the next section of the floodwall to be built; that section will be from the present terminus at Merriwether Street north to a point behind the old mill building near the foot of Bellevue Street.

Gene Dale, 68, of St. Louis and former hurler of the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds, died Thursday; he is remembered by Cape Girardeau baseball fans as having hurled for the Capahas in the early 1920s.

75 years ago: March 22, 1933

Even if the present high stage of the Ohio River at Cairo, Ill., becomes dangerous, T.T. Knappen, district War Department engineer, says the government has made no plan to use the Missouri floodway along the Mississippi River, opposite Cairo.

The Lions Club has voted not to stage its annual Easter egg hunt this year; the club is sponsoring a milk-and-egg fund in the public school system, and the cost of this, together with a tie-up of funds when Sturdivant Bank failed, has depleted the club's treasury.

100 years ago: March 22, 1908

The Rev. C.H. Green, former pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church, has returned to the city under orders of the Baptist Association of Southeast Missouri for the purpose of pastoring and assisting the congregation in recovering its church house on Frederick Street, near Jefferson Avenue; in some manner, the members permitted the church to be sold; George Bullinger bought it in order to save it for a time when the members might raise the money, $504.04, and buy it from him.

A big revival meeting begins at the Baptist Church on Broadway; Evangelist M.W. Barcafer and wife will be here this week to assist the pastor, the Rev. J.O. Willett.
