The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Southeast Missouri State University has been suspended indefinitely following an investigation into a female student's complaint she was sexually abused at the fraternity house on campus Nov. 10.
After a lapse of nearly 20 years, there is once again a brightly lit "community Christmas tree" in Courthouse Park; the Douglas fir, located near the bandstand in the park, was presented as a gift to the city in 1970 by the Cape Girardeau Business and Professional Women's Club; it has been deemed large enough to decorate.
The first stage of construction of Lake Girardeau at Crump -- pressure grouting -- is scheduled to be finished this week; meanwhile, work is progressing on the dam itself, to permit as much work as possible to be continued this winter.
Under an ordinance that is given its first reading by the Cape Girardeau City Council in the afternoon, salaries of its elected officials will be raised to $8,500 per year for the mayor and $5,900 for the commissioners.

Prospects for Christmas cheer in the homes of Cape Girardeau's unfortunates brightens with the organization of the Community Christmas Club; the group, representing churches, fraternal groups and civic organizations, will provide a Christmas basket for each family not otherwise provided for.
Three Fornfelt cows strayed over into Illmo shortly after that town's new stock law went into effect and soon found themselves in the pound; the kine were pasturing in the C. & E.I. corn field and got into Illmo through a break in the fence on the east end of the field; it costs the owners $4.50 each to get their cows home; Fornfelt doesn't have a stock law.
Broadway photographer A.W. Schrader has purchased the lot at 517 Broadway from Herman Rabich; he plans to remodel the small frame residence on the lot for use as a studio.
