A waste-disposal company's proposed transfer station was buried last night by the city council, which turned down a permit for such a facility; Allen Waste Management of Carterville, Ill., owes the city $93,420 in landfill fees in connection with the dumping of trash at the Cape Girardeau landfill.

A daylong search in west Cape Girardeau County for two armed robbery suspects who held up a Perry County convenience store yesterday morning was called off around midnight Monday after the suspects took a county woman and her young son hostage and took their car; they weren't harmed and were left in their home when the robbers fled in the vehicle.

A combination of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain late last night and early this morning leave the Cape Girardeau area under a thin coat of ice, making auto travel difficult.

Christmas for Cape Girardeau's needy is being planned by the Salvation Army, with the cooperation of the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Fox Theaters management and the chamber of commerce; the plan is to distribute at least 200 food baskets, the value of each being about $2.

Although the owners are silent, reports are that the Hillcrest Golf Club on U.S. 61, four miles west of Cape Girardeau, is changing hands; it is said that Jess Gangle and George Koss will acquire the club.

Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Houck goes down to New Madrid, Mo., to visit Mrs. Houck's mother for a few days.

ALTENBURG, Mo. -- The Lutheran historical society of Perry County has moved the old log cabin in which the first Lutheran school in the county was held 75 years ago to the church park, where it will be preserved; this was the first school of the synod of Missouri, Ohio and other states.
