WOLF LAKE, Ill. -- The Trojan Powder Plant here, a major Union County employer, plans to close its doors at the end of the month, a victim of the continuing slump in the construction agency; the shutdown will eliminate about 102 jobs.
For the third time in about six months, voters in the Jackson R-2 School District will go to the polls in a special election Feb. 2, as school officials seek approval of bond issues for construction of classroom additions and expansion of the high school gymnasium.
William J. Kies, 69, president of Riverside Lumber Co., one of the leaders who made possible construction of the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge and a participant in many community endeavors, dies at his home, 916 W. Cape Rock Dr., after an illness of several months.
Sixty-four Cape Girardeans expressed a desire to unite with the congregation of the First Christian Church during the past week, says the Rev. Guy Steele, pastor; all but seven are received in services today; the new membership came at the climax of an intensive three-month visitation campaign.

Main St., are being remodeled; the building formerly occupied by Schindler Barber Shop is being renovated and a new front added; a grocery store will occpy that location; a confectionery will occupy the building at 110 N. Main, if a deal now pending matures.
At a concert given by the Central High School Band at Washington School, "Dear Old Central High," Central's new pep song, is played; words and music are by William Shivelbine, the band's director.
Presiding Elder Crow holds quarterly conference at the Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau for the Rev. E.T. Adams, the local pastor; in the afternoon, Crow goes to Mount Tabor and preaches.
Will Kurre, formerly of Cape Girardeau, has been killed in an accident in St. Louis; Kurre, a brickmason, was at work on the new school building at Union and Kensington avenues, when he was knocked from an unfinished wall and fell 50 feet onto a pile of bricks.
