Delta - Committee studying condition of Delta Public School buildings will recommend local tax increase to pay for "critical" repairs; committee will likely recommend 61-cent tax levy increase; funds would be used to replace heating and cooling system at elementary school and for roof repairs at elementary school and high school annex.

25 years ago: Dec. 8, 1976

Women faced with holiday baking are squawking at high price of eggs; one dozen grade A large eggs jumped this month to record high price of 91 cents, up 14 cents from November and 10 cents above last December's cost.

In what he describes as forum "...to lower rumor level," Southeast Missouri State University president, Dr. Robert E. Leestamper, meets with faculty and students to answer "any questions that are on your minds"; most come from faculty; only two students are at meeting; majority of questions focus on primary faculty concern - their job security.

50 years ago: Dec. 8, 1951

Rush H. Limbaugh, Cape Girardeau attorney, has been selected by editors of Who's Who in American, standard biographical reference of contemporary personalities, for inclusion in 1952 biennial edition which will be published soon.

Cpl. Hartford Hill Jr., 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hartford Hill of Cape Girardeau, has been promoted to sergeant and is instructor in atomic warfare at El Toro Marine Corps base at Santa Ana, Calif.; Hill entered service in March and took his basic training at El Toro.

75 years ago: Dec. 8, 1926

Interstate Commerce Commission and Public Service Commissions of Missouri and Arkansas will be asked immediately to approve purchase by Frisco Railroad of St. Louis, Kennett & Southeastern short line between Kennett and Piggott, Ark.; negotiations for sale of short line to Frisco were closed this week, Frisco stepping in ahead of Cotton Belt railway company, which had also submitted bid for property.

Twenty-two sheriffs, deputies and town and city law officers, representing seven counties, are in session here for purpose of organizing to enable them to more effectively combat crime in Southeast Missouri; peace officers are meeting at Idan-Ha Hotel.
