Ray Porter, who is associated with the International Match Co. of St. Louis, is the speaker at a luncheon of the Christian Business Men's Committee.

The Cape County Industrial Development Authority has given preliminary approval to the issuance of $7 million in industrial revenue bonds for expansion and refinancing of the Chateau Girardeau retirement facility at Independence Street and Mount Auburn Road.

50 years ago: Dec. 7, 1960

Mayor Walter H. Ford says comments to him have been favorable toward the city's plan to build a sewage disposal system with general obligation bonds retirable over 20 years with payments from residents based on proportionate use of water; he hopes voters will approve the largest bond issue in city history, $1,598,000, to finance construction of the system.

Postal employees, taking aim at the host of pigeons that nightly roost in the copings of the post office building and create an unhealthy mess, dispatch about 30 birds in the evening using shotguns and scatter loads.

75 years ago: Dec. 7, 1935

Delegates from four states, flying high the banner of Young Democratic Clubs, gather in Cape Girardeau for a dinner, rally and general get-together in the evening at Houck Field House.

About 250 fans attended a boxing show staged Thursday night in the Old Opera House building sponsored by the Cape Rock Athletic Club, with R.J. Ford and V.M. Vancil as the promoters; the main bout was between Jackie D. Burton of Blytheville, Ark., and Young Simington of Poplar Bluff, Mo., with the former scoring a technical knockout in the seventh round.

100 years ago: Dec. 7, 1910

The Daily Republican has even more forcefully entered the debate over the Frisco Railroad franchise; the publishers yesterday initiated proceedings in Common Pleas Court to restrain the City Council from issuing a franchise to the railroad.

Dr. J.M. Finney has secured the services of Harvey C. Jones, a prescription druggist of Kansas City.
