The American Heart Association has received permission from the Jackson Board of Aldermen to conduct a controversial door-to-door fundraising drive in Jackson.

A past president of the Cape Girar­deau League of Women Voters and a strong proponent of the recently enacted charter form of government is the fifth person to file as a candidate for the Cape Girardeau City Council; Kathryn Braasch files her nominating petition in the afternoon.

50 years ago: Dec. 6, 1958

A proposed policy of the U.S. Office of Education for the distribution of millions of dollars in student funds under the National Defense Education Act is termed "class legislation and discrimination of the worst sort" against public-supported colleges and university by Dr. Mark F. Scully, president of State College; Scully says most of the federal money will go to high-cost private institutions.

A special education program for mentally retarded children of the district began taking shape at a meeting last night of the newly organized Cape Girardeau County Association for Retarded Children.

75 years ago: Dec. 6, 1933

Demonstrating that he is the Billy Sunday of old, the famous evangelist last night slashed out in characteristic style at liquor, modernism and "icicle churches" in his opening sermon of a two-week meeting at Teachers College auditorium.

Jackson officials yesterday formally took over Sanford Park on Highway 25 by paying the Cape County Savings Bank $5,000; Carroll Knox has been placed in charge of making improvements to the tract, including clearing out the brush and rubbish.

100 years ago: Dec. 6, 1908

The Rev. Adolph Kistler at the Presbyterian church begins a series of religious lectures that will extend over three months; these lectures are founded on the incidents of Kistler's trip abroad last summer.

Members of the Elks Club and several visitors pay tribute to the memories of their brother Elks who died within the past year; Acting Exalted Ruler A.P. Stewart presides at the ceremony honoring J.L. Reinich, Gus. P. Kopper and A.E. Bohicke.
