Approval of additional $90,000 for feasibility study on Mississippi River port in vicinity of Diversion Channel should assure completion of federal study by end of 1977; appropriation to Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District is announced by C.W. Rushing, chairman of Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority Commission, who says he learned of funding just last week.

50 years ago: Dec. 6, 1951

Acting on joint recommendation of Democratic chairman of three counties involved, Gov. Forrest Smith late yesterday appointed State Sen. D.W. Gilmore, Democrat of Benton, circuit judge to succeed Judge R.B. Oliver III, after accepting his resignation from Senate; Oliver has resigned to take job with Skelly Oil Co. in Kansas City; resignation of Gilmore will necessitate holding special election in 27th senatorial district to fill vacancy.

Lee L. Albert, local weather observer, is among 51 such men and women in Missouri who are recognized by Weather Bureau for their dedication to task over long period of years; Albert took over work in 1921, after death of his brother, Irvin Albert, who carried on family service that originated in 1880s when another brother, W.S. Albert, did the work.

75 years ago: Dec. 6, 1926

Bids for construction of new traffic bridge across Mississippi River here, opened in St. Louis Saturday, were "very satisfactory," and below estimate of cost as outline by engineers, say officials of Cape Girardeau Bridge Co.

New $500,000 hotel to be built at Broadway and Fountain will be known as The William Harrison as memorial to late civic and business leader of Cape Girardeau; Hotel Securities Co. is apparently agreeable to this suggestion made by Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
