1987

Free rides are again being offered during New Year's Eve celebrations by the Yellow Cab Co. of Cape Girardeau; a number of local nightclubs are also promoting regular, designated driver programs to help ring in the New Year on a happy note.

Tax payments are pouring in to the office of Cape Girardeau County Collector Harold Kuehle as the deadline rapidly approaches; county taxpayers have until 4:30 today to pay in person; by mail, payments must be postmarked before midnight.

1962

A watch night service starts at 7:30 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, as the faithful welcome in the new year; principal speaker for the event is the Rev. Raymond Bugg of Pine Bluff, Ark., a former pastor of the local congregation.

Cape Girardeau construction rocketed to new heights this year on the fuel of a mammoth college expansion effort and flourishing commercial and residential building; at least three city building records were toppled as building permits totaled $9,036,551 for 1962.

1937

The congregation of the Assembly of God Church on South Sprigg Street conducts a watch night service; preaching the sermon is the Rev. Herbert Bruhn of Chaffee, Mo.

Spending an average of $2,022 every working day during 1937, Cape Girardeau constructed 96 buildings at an aggregate cost of $633,343; 66 of them were dwellings.

1912

Sheriff-elect Will A. Summers will take his place as the county server of notices and carrier of mandates tomorrow; today he is escorting his successor, Cape Girardeau City Marshal Deliverance A. Nichols, around the town.

Cape Girardeau's boys of the Sixth Missouri Regiment, who left here in the days of civil strife as Company K and returned following the rebellion with the same designation, have been renamed Company H; the adjutant general has given the "K" label to the new company organized at Sedalia, Mo.
