BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- The Stoddard County prosecuting attorney expects to file charges today in connection with a cockfight which reportedly took place Saturday afternoon in a shed south of Advance, Mo.; 24 people, including three juveniles, were issued summonses during the raid.

Beating an incumbent is tough, says former state treasurer Mel Carnahan, who has been mentioned as a possible Democratic candidate next year for the 8th District congressional seat now held by Cape Girardeau Republican Bill Emerson; Carnahan hasn't decided whether he will seek the seat.

50 years ago: Dec. 30, 1960

Judge Marshall Craig, who today conducts the last court day of the 33rd Judicial Circuit in Cape Girardeau County, is presented a plaque in recognition of his service by the lawyers of the county; under a new alignment of the judicial circuit, Craig relinquishes Cape County from his jurisdiction and will have only Scott and Mississippi counties.

The State College Indians of Cape Girardeau defeat the Maryville Bearcats, 80-70, at Warrensburg, Mo., to give them their second straight championship in the second annual MIAA Conference invitational tournament.

75 years ago: Dec. 30, 1935

There's not a lot of hope for a truce on the part of winter as Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri digs out of the first big snow of the season and seeks to forget the chilliest night of the year; 5 inches of snow fell Saturday night, followed by near-zero temperatures early today.

G.W. "Red" Mabrey, veteran Cape Girardeau barber, has sold his half interest in the Idan-ha barbershop to H.B. Campbell of Alton, Ill.; Frank Taylor retains his half interest in the business.

100 years ago: Dec. 30, 1910

Mr. and Mrs. I.R. Kelso, and daughter Ruth, return from St. Louis, where they have been for the past week visiting friends.

In order to "square the square" at Jackson, the county court purchases the Hoffmeister building and the one belonging to H.L. Jones, both being situated on the courthouse square, paying $1,600; the buildings will be moved back far enough that the sides of the public square will be square.
