1987

Dredging of the John L. Wescoat Marina at Trail of Tears State Park, which began last week along the Mississippi River, should be completed by the end of December; an estimated 350,000 to 360,000 cubic yards of sand and silt that has inundated the marina since it was built in 1975 is being removed.

Donald Strohmeyer of Cape Girardeau is elected president of the board of directors of the SEMO District Fair Association.

1962

With the varied works of Sando Bodo, Hungarian refugee artist as the center of interest, more than 2,500 people visited The Missourian's 16th annual Art Exhibition during the weekend.

The Cape Girardeau City Council agrees to study a State College plan for lighting improvements on College Hill Place, between Pacific Street and Dearmont Quadrangle; on Henderson Avenue, between Normal Avenue and Rockwood Drive, and on Pacific Street, between Normal Avenue and Alta Vista Drive.

1937

While the Cape Girardeau Fire Department's ladder truck is in the repair shop, a motor truck is being used as a hose and ladder "wagon" by the department.

Construction began yesterday on West Independence Street, just east of Highway 61, for a new building to house the Polack Hide & Fur Co.; Polack was formerly located at 518 Independence St., but that structure burned recently.

1912

J. Vaughn Priest is once again proprietor of the Central Inn at Jackson; Priest took an intermission of about two months, during which time H.G. Tait, ostensibly from St. Louis, ran the place; Sunday, Tait blew town, leaving behind numerous overdue bills from butchers, grocers and other caterers.

Officers are elected by the Wilson Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, in the evening: High priest, H.H. Haas; king, Edward Willer; scribe, J.A. Kinder; treasurer, J.A. Kinder; secretary, W.C. Bain; trustee, W.H. Huters.
