A citizens committee for the Cape Girardeau public schools receives its charge from school board chairman Keith R. Tolliver and Dr. Mark F. Scully, president of State College; together for the first time, the 27-member body is given carte blanche to look into the nooks and crannies of the school system.

Ann Wallman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wallman of Gordonville, recently was presented a dictionary by Otto A. Koenig, librarian at the Riverside Regional Library; she was honored for having read and reported on 85 books during the library's summer reading program.

75 years ago: Dec. 3, 1934

Nothing but a small pile of bricks remains of the old Boston Rooming House building at the northwest corner of Broadway and Main Street; other small buildings at that location are also being torn down in preparation for grading the site and constructing a large super-service station for the Sinclair Oil Co.

Abe Stuber, coach at State College, has been mentioned as a possible successor to Frank Carideo as coach of football at Missouri University.

100 years ago: Dec. 3, 1909

In order to keep up with its work, The Republican has found it necessary to install another Mergenthaler typecasting machine; the new equipment will be placed in operation next week.

Eugene B. Sullivan of Cape Girardeau enlisted in the Navy at Chicago a few days ago as a machinist mate and was assigned to the warship Idaho, now at the Philadelphia Navy yards; another former Cape Girardeau boy, John Flynn, is on the same ship, acting as bookkeeper.
