Seven cars of a 90-car train on the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks are derailed in the afternoon just off Aquamsi Street, south of William Street; the southbound train is transporting empty coal cars onto the "coal siding" along the Mississippi River when the accident occurs.

Sixteen retail outlets in the Cape Girardeau area have been approved so far as licensees to sell lottery tickets; outlets in the city include Par Gas, the Keg Shop, Pizza Perfect, Rhodes City Truck Plaza, Hahs Office Supply, Bi-State Oil Co., Fischer's Food Market, Gas-Up Huckstep Oil Co. and U-Haul.

State College has filed an application with the federal Housing and Home Finance Agency regional office at Fort Worth, Texas, for $2.5 million to construct additional residence facilities on the campus; if the loan is approved, the college plans to build housing for 610 students.

Capital structure of the new Cape State Bank is increased from $375,000 to $500,000 by vote of stockholders' proxies, making available an additional 500 shares of stock; the new stock will be offered at $265 a share.

75 years ago: Dec. 28, 1935

Snowfall, which the weatherman had forecast, blankets Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri; the 2-inch snow, which began falling early last night, comes on the heels of a lighter one early Christmas Day.

Work is nearing completion on the construction of a one-story, five-room stucco residence on Perry Avenue, north of Broadway, for Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Zickfeld; Alvin Zickfeld, a brother, is contractor.

100 years ago: Dec. 28, 1910

The 47 mules the sheriff of Scott County has been feeding since they were seized at the instance of the Cape Girardeau & Thebes Terminal Railroad, when the road instituted a suit against the contractors for damages, have been released to the contractors, they having given bond.

Laura Igel is being welcomed home by her friends after returning from an extended visit in Europe; she got back Christmas Day, having sailed from Bremen, Germany, on the steamer George Washington on Dec. 13, arriving in New York the 22nd.
