CAIRO, Ill. -- An Alexander County circuit judge denies a request by the Ilada Energy Corp. to stop an investigation by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency into operations at Ilada's now-closed waste oil storage plant near East Cape Girardeau, Ill.; testimony indicates levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in concentrations of more than three times the federal standards at the plant.

The city of Cape Girardeau and Main Street Levee Improvement District are given an extension until Feb. 4 in which to enter their pleadings to a suit in Common Pleas Court; the suit challenges the validity of a city ordinance allowing use of city property for the floodwall from Bellevue Street south to Merriwether Street.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A business building in the west end is destroyed by fire with a loss estimated at $175,000; it is the Swacker Sales Co., a frame structure on the south side of Malone Avenue-U.S. 60.

75 years ago: Dec. 28, 1932

JEFFERSON CITY -- It is reported that Tom Scott, retiring sheriff of Scott County, will be appointed chief deputy warden of the state penitentiary by governor -elect Guy B. Park; Scott would have an annual salary of $2,500 and a furnished residence.

At its last session of the year, the Cape Girardeau County Court yesterday transacted much business; one important matter was the formal order dissolving the village of Allenville as a corporation.

100 years ago: Dec. 28, 1907

All the Frisco employees working in the car departments of Cape Girardeau are laid off until next Monday and Tuesday; only enough men are working in any of the departments to keep the road running.

Conrad Lind, who has been in Buffalo, N.Y., with his son since he left Cape Girardeau last summer, has returned for a short visit; he will also visit family in Cairo, Ill.
