1987

While the Christmas season is coming to a close, the Salvation Army's Tree of Lights campaign is still going on; the campaign is about $7,000 short of its goal.

Construction of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port near Scott City is progressing ahead of schedule, thanks to good weather this past fall; dredging of the 1,800-foot slack water harbor, the heart of the first phase of the port development, began earlier this month.

1962

Mount Tabor Park, named for what is believed to be the site of the first English-speaking school west of the Mississippi, is taking shape as a likely major recreation area next summer; under development by the Cape Special Road District, the park is at the intersection of Benton and Bloomfield roads; it has been cleared of underbrush, and further work will be done as the picnic season approaches.

R.K. Swindle of Senath, Mo., has been appointed to the Cape Girardeau State College Board of Regents, and L.S. Simmons of Cape Girardeau has been named to a second six-year term on the board; the appointments are announced by Gov. John M. Dalton.

1937

A pro forma decree for incorporation of the B'nai Israel congregation, which is to direct the Jewish synagogue here, has been issued in Common Pleas Court; David Minnen is president of the congregation.

Walter D. Black, who bought the entire crop of a pecan grove in Mississippi, reports he marketed 6,849 pounds of nuts in Cape Girardeau; on his trips to the grove, he carried 100 bushels of apples and sold them there.

1912

Mary Allen of the Normal School faculty has resigned her position and will go to St. Louis this winter to study vocal music under Alexander Hennemann; Allen has a beautiful contralto voice and is a favorite singer in Cape Girardeau.

The Hely rock-crushing plant begins operations again in the morning after being shut down a few days for the Christmas holidays; the tracks are full of empty cars waiting to be filled with crushed rock for ballasting the Cotton Belt double track from the Thebes, Ill., bridge to Dexter, Mo.
