The Jackson High School Indians varsity football cheerleading squad departs late in the evening for Dallas; the 12-girl squad will compete in the National Cheerleaders Association's national competition; the squad advanced to the competition after being dubbed the best high school squad at the seventh National Cheerleaders Association Camp in August, held at Southeast Missouri State University.

Recent rains have provided a welcome Christmas present for barge operators plagued by low water in the Mississippi River; because of the precipitation, restrictions on barge traffic on the river were eased Friday by the Coast Guard.

With temperatures mounting to almost March-like levels, Cape Girardeau residents feel a twinge of spring fever; the moderate temperatures promise to be short-lived, however, as the weather bureau predicts colder weather by the end of the week.

The 19th annual Cape Girardeau College High Basketball Tournament will begin this evening, with the host team Preps tangling with Fredericktown High.

The Christmas holiday continues in Cape Girardeau, with many businesses and industries closed for the day or running on shortened hours.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Trumbull Oil Co. of New York, which has secured leases on 8,000 acres of land in the Boise Brule Bottoms below McBride, Mo., will start a test well by early spring if the acreage can be increased to 10,000 soon; in addition, the company has leases on about 20,000 acres of land in Illinois near Chester.

1913

Cape Girardeau's first public Christmas tree was a huge success; Frank Kimmel provided all the funds to secure the tree and decorate it and purchase presents for about 200 youngsters.

Cape Girardeans awoke yesterday to find snow falling so thickly they couldn't see across the street; in all, an inch or so of snow accumulated, making travel difficult and children happy.
