MARSTON, Mo. -- United Steelworkers Local 7686 members, who have been on strike against Noranda Aluminum Inc. since Sept. 1, have agreed to return to work without accepting the company's work-contract offer; that decision follows the company's announcement last week that it would replace the striking workers if they didn't return to their jobs Monday.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has authorized the sale of a chamber-owned building at 100 S. Minnesota Ave.; the name of the purchaser hasn't been made public.

1964

The Cape Girardeau School Board, meeting last night to reconsider bids for the renovation of the old junior high school, was able to award only an electrical contract, to Kelpe Electric Co.; the board rejected the low bid for the general work.

Rewards of service were distributed last night to many dedicated scouters from the Shawnee Boy Scout District at the annual Scout Leaders Appreciation Dinner at the Arena Building; A.W. Zimmer, who for almost 40 years has been a volunteer scouter, received the council's top recognition, the Silver Beaver Award.

1939

Not discovered until well advanced, fire early in the morning guts the building at 608 Good Hope St., housing the Braun Bros. grocery store and causing around $15,000 in damage; while the front of the structure isn't greatly harmed, the north or rear half of it is burned away, and the entire stock is damaged by fire, heat or water.

Because of crowded conditions at Teachers College, the Webster Literary Society, like the Benton Society, is also endeavoring to locate in a permanent home.

1914

The bank of the river where contractor W.F. McMurry's forces are building the sea wall has continued to slide and fall away from the Frisco tracks, until it is apparent the whole bank will go out if it should rain hard; the piling alone is holding the foundation of the tracks.

Oscar Knehans, the newly appointed referee in bankruptcy, returns from St. Louis, where he had been spending a few days in the U.S. Marshal's office; Knehans' household goods arrived here on the boat a few days ago and are being moved to the Engelmann house on Bellevue Street where the family will make its home.
