1987

Illinois highway officials have expressed interest in conducting a feasibility study for a proposed highway across Southern Illinois; Illinois Transportation Secretary Gregory Baise says he'll recommend to Illinois Gov. James Thompson that the state participate in the study, provided the states of Missouri and Kentucky assist in financing it.

The park board urges the city to assist a soccer league in replacing a foot bridge and installing a water line at Shawnee Park; the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board makes its recommendation at the board meeting at the request of Cape Area Youth Soccer Association officials.

1962

Dr. H. Guy Moore, who was inaugurated as the 10th president of William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., on Nov. 8, fills the pulpit of First Baptist Church here at both preaching services.

The Rev. W.H. Bruening, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church at Washington, D.C., delivers the message at the dedication service for the new St. Paul Lutheran Church at Jackson; the brick and concrete church was designed by Rex Becker of Froese, Maack & Becker of St. Louis.

1937

A Christmas tree, 15 feet high, given to the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce by Roscoe O'Connell, will be turned over to city officials; it will probably be set up in Fairground Park, at the northwest corner of the West Broadway and West End Boulevard intersection.

Drilling for oil in several Illinois counties, across the Mississippi River north from Cape Girardeau, is being pushed and a number of the shafts have "come in," at depths varying from 300 to 2,300 feet.

1912

Electrician Sheppard has received two stands of lights for the Themis Street entrance to Courthouse Park, and as soon as the concrete bases are placed, the lights will be installed.

Some more houses will have to be built soon, if the demands for homes by strangers wanting to live in Cape Girardeau are to be met; the real estate men are hard up for houses to rent.
