Veteran state Rep. Joe Driskill and former longtime representative Marvin E. Proffer are among those being mentioned for high-level positions in administration of governor-elect Mel Carnahan; Driskill is being touted as possible director of Department of Economic Development, while Proffer is under consideration for commissioner of administration.

Potentially explosive situation has city officials ready to crack down on bulk gasoline delivery drivers who permit storage tanks to overrun while filling them at service stations; drivers could find themselves in City Court as result; Fire Chief Charles F. Mills is concerned about spills, which he says are happening on average of about once a month.

Fifty-four hourly employees at Associated Building Centers on Nash Road narrowly voted to dump Teamsters Union as their bargaining agent and go with independent union from St. Louis area; employees Wednesday voted to oust International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 574 in favor of the Congress of Independent Unions.

50 years ago: Dec. 2, 1952

Two factions of Humane Society served letters on city council last night, one asking for increase in funds to carry out organization's work, and other declaring opposition to any further municipal aid; then Civic 500 presented petitions signed by 1,044 people asking that owners be required to keep dogs penned and on leash when they are outside; Mayor Manning P. Greer and Commissioner Louis Brune backed present ordinance, while Commissioners Roy Smith and Philip H. Steck declared for full-time ban on dogs-at-large.

C.J. Payne, who retired from faculty of State College in 1947 after 31 years of teaching there, died last night at his home in North Kansas City.

75 years ago: Dec. 2, 1927

Death last night of former Gov. Herbert S. Hadley, chancellor of Washington University, brings sorrow to many friends in Cape Girardeau and recalls some of his visits during his political activities; Hadley was in public service in Missouri for 25 years; he died at his home in Clayton.

Jefferson City -- Missouri Highway Commission votes to locate Highway 61 through New Madrid and Scott counties along proposed "east route"; institution of court proceedings is expected to be next step in controversy; although no definite statement is made, proponents of "west route" say New Madrid County Court has instructed Prosecuting Attorney J. Baker to bring injunction suit in case east route location was approved.
