1987

An expected decline in freshmen enrollment during the next few years is among issues being considered in determining whether Southeast Missouri State University should move to Division I in the National Collegiate Athletic Association; a 19-member task force is gathering information pertinent to a report it will issue on whether the university should move from Division II to Division I.

Citing changing circumstances in Missouri, Gov. John Ashcroft announces he will propose the creation of a rural economic assistance program next year; Ashcroft outlines his plan in Scott City at one of a series of news conferences across the state.

1962

The State Highway Commission yesterday turned down for a second time the bid of the R.B. Potashnick-D.L. Harrison Co. for Cape Girardeau's urban Highway 61 project; but that contractor did win a $5,312,617 contract for a new Interstate 55 project from Scott City to Sikeston, Mo.

The Frisco Railroad announced it will build a new passenger-freight station at Cape Girardeau next summer, replacing its building thought to have been built about three-quarters of a century ago; the new structure will go up a short distance north of the old one.

1937

James V. Johnson of Moccasin Springs, between Neelys Landing and Egypt Mills, recently brought the pelt of a large timber wolf to the county clerk's office in Jackson to claim his bounty for exterminating the beast, which he caught in a trap; the wolf was larger than usual; wolves have become so numerous in the northeast section of the county that the loss of livestock caused by them is becoming serious.

The Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. here gives to all employees a Christmas present in the form of a check equivalent to two weeks' salary, with a minimum of $50.

1912

The handsome new organ at Centenary Methodist Church is in place and will be dedicated tomorrow night in a recital by William M. Jenkins of St. Louis.

L.D. Hartle, W.O. Welty and C.H. Whittacker of Whitewater drive in to Cape Girardeau in the morning to get a load of lumber to be used in repairing the school house there.
