25 years ago: Dec. 18, 1985

Contrary to the opinions expressed by Cape Girardeau City Council members Monday, Thad Bullock says there has been no significant deterioration of his Marquette Hotel on Broadway.

The Cape Girardeau Jaycees, decked out in Santa suits, deliver Toybox presents to over 1,300 youngsters in the evening; for 11 years, the local Jaycees and the Southeast Missourian have co-sponsored Toybox, which seeks to bring Christmas joy to needy children.

50 years ago: Dec. 18, 1960

Members of the congregation of Christ Lutheran Church of Gordonville dedicate their new church building in special services in the morning; delivering the dedicatory sermon is the Rev. Francis Roschke of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau; the new building, which was started on July 1, includes a sanctuary, 12 Sunday School classrooms, a pastor's office and a vestry.

Iona Baptist Church presents its first Christmas program in the new church building near Oriole in the evening.

75 years ago: Dec. 18, 1935

Three Civilian Conservation Corps camps in Southeast Missouri -- at Delta, New Madrid and Hayti -- will continue to be engaged in drainage work at least through March, says Robert Fechner, director of the C.C.C., in a letter to The Missourian.

Workers are adding an extra teller's cage and window on the south side of the First National Bank building lobby, which cashier Herman Bremermann will occupy; the partition between the office of president Clyde D. Harris and the teller cages has been torn away to make room for the addition.

100 years ago: Dec. 18, 1910

Coach Henry Schultz and his Normal School basketball team return in the afternoon from Jonesboro, Ark., where they played two games with Woodland College; the Arkansas team won the first game 27-18, while the second game was taken by the Cape Girardeau boys, 25-24.

The choir at St. Vincent's Catholic Church furnishes some beautiful selections at vespers; the choir is composed of students from St. Vincent's College and is under the direction of Professor Coupal, instructor of music at the college.
