Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents has hired Kentucky educator as institution's new provost; Charles E. Kupchella, dean of Ogden College of Science, Technology and Health and professor of biology at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, was hired Thursday during brief, closed-door meeting; he replaces Leslie Cochran, who accepted job as president of Youngstown State University in Ohio earlier this year.

Board of Regents at Southeast Missouri State University yesterday approved design plans for major renovations to Towers West and North residence halls that will ultimately mean higher charges for students who room there.

25 years ago: Dec. 18, 1977

Unless additional donations are made, Cape Girardeau United Way drive stands chance of not meeting its goal for first time in several years; campaign chairman, Richard Giles, says contributions are at 95.6 percent of goal; total pledges and contributions stand at $148,500.

Current issue of Missouri Life magazine features story and artwork by Cape Girardeau artist, John Boos; feature, entitled "The Lure of the River Hills," tells of highways and back roads of historic and colorful River Hills region in northeastern Cape Girardeau and eastern Perry counties.

50 years ago: Dec. 18, 1952

Orville Eakers and his brother, Elvin Eakers, have purchased building at 12 Broadway and will move their Town Pump tavern to that location from 36 N. Main as soon as building is vacated and redecoration program is completed; building, lower floor of which is occupied by Stokes Drug Store, was purchased from Clifton Norvell.

Cape Girardeau osteopaths are "very well pleased" with ruling of St. Louis Court of Appeals giving them right to practice in tax-supported county hospitals in Missouri, says Dr. P.A. McGuerty, president of Cape Ostheopathic Hospital Association; since osteopathic physicians and surgeons have their own hospital here, only effect locally will be to allow osteopaths on staff of Cape Osteopathic Hospital to practice in Perry County Memorial Hospital in Perryville.

75 years ago: Dec. 18, 1927

The Rev. W.O. Schulze, pastor of Grace Methodist Church, has been elected president of Ministerial Alliance for coming year; the Rev. C.D. Lathrup, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, was elected vice president, and the Rev. Reinhart Leymann, pastor of Christ Evangelical Church, was chosen secretary.

Employees of Cape Girardeau plant of Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. received their first annual bonus Saturday; total of 235 men received checks which totaled several thousand dollars, and was based on years of service; according to plant officials, bonus will be annual affair.
