Jackson - Ever since Cape Girardeau County enacted half-cent sales tax for general revenue in March 1980, receipts have increased consistently every year; but in 1991, county's string of growth snapped; total collections were just $8,762.38 greater than what was collected in 1990 - increase of just .28 percent.
Jackson - Ivan E. McLain, who expressed interest in running for sheriff of Cape Girardeau County after resigning as police chief in Chaffee this week, won't meet one-year residence requirement outlined in state law for sheriff candidates.

Matney of Rolla are new owners of Nash agency at 2119 West Broadway, formerly known as Southeast Missouri Nash, Inc.; new firm will be known as Cape County Nash; partners purchased firm from Harris Motor Co., effective this week; Bob Turlin, formerly with Harris Motor Co., is chief mechanic in new concern.
75 years ago: Dec. 12, 1926
In hopes of securing more central location so services may be attended by persons of denomination throughout the city, the Rev. R.M. Barrett of Oakland City, Ind., has moved his worship services to Park Theater on Broadway; Barrett hopes to organize a General Baptist church in Cape Girardeau.
Will Mayfield College at Marble Hill, Baptist school in Southeast Missouri, is carrying on drive to raise funds for completion of its new buildings, which are under construction; it is hoped to complete drive within 30 days; total of $35,000 is needed to complete construction work.
