A warehouse supervisor for Wetterau Inc. becomes the third person to file for the Cape Girardeau City Council; Hugh White, who was an unsuccessful candidate for the council in 1986, will join incumbents Peter Hilty and David Barklage on the ballot.

About $7,000 was raised for downtown Christmas decorations at the first annual holiday auction held by the Downtown Merchants Association last night at Port Cape Girardeau; serving as auctioneer was Charles Hutson.

1962

Winter, arriving 13 days ahead of schedule, struck a premature blow at Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri overnight, depositing 1 1/2 inches of snow and dropping the temperature to 7 degrees at the municipal airport.

The Cape Girardeau School Board last night voted to install a kitchen in the new junior high school, vetoing the alternatives of a central kitchen or expanded facilities at Central High School; in other business, the board discusses the renovation of the old junior high school; Supt. Charles E. House supports moving some sixth grade classes to the old building to ease crowding in the elementary schools.

1937

The Mississippi River drops to a stage of 5.1 feet at Cape Girardeau, a fall of about 10 inches in the last 24 hours; the river is filled with ice floes, causing considerable concern at the Corps of Engineers office here; the government's river fleet has been moved into the harbor south of Cape Rock, where it is believed to be safe from the heavy ice floes.

Nearly 70 boys and girls are being supplied free lunches at public schools daily, but the number hasn't changed appreciably for several weeks; the Lions Club furnishes milk, the relief agency furnishes apples, and the cafeterias supply the other articles, such as sandwiches, soups, fruit and puddings.

Sheriff-elect W.A. Summers has completed his list of deputies, appointing A.E. Sheppard jailer and Garnett Morton as the other deputy; Summers won't move to Jackson, but will maintain his home in Cape Girardeau.

P.G. Holden of Ames, Iowa, the greatest corn man in the world, arrives on the noon train, ready to take part in the big corn show at the Normal School; he will speak at 10 a.m. tomorrow and all should hear him.
