Chaffee - Chaffee Police Chief Ivan McLain has resigned and is eyeing possible campaign next year for Cape Girardeau County Sheriff, job he once held for more than 10 years; McLain, 61, submitted letter of resignation Thursday night at Chaffee Police Commission meeting; he plans to move to Cape Girardeau area.

Barry Zerbe of Cape Area Youth Soccer Association Monday urged members of city's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board not to overlook soccer field expansion in its Shawnee Park development plans; Zerbe said rapidly expanding league is in desperate need of additional fields; park board last month submitted proposal to City Council asking that tourism fund dollars be spent on construction of softball complex at Shawnee Park.

25 years ago: Dec. 10, 1976

State Rep. Gary W. Rust is expected to announce next week that he won't resign his 156th District legislative seat, but will remain in General Assembly; sources close to Rust family have reported that Rust has decided to remain in legislature; Republican leaders in community have urged him not to step aside; he announced in late September that business and family responsibilities made it necessary for him to forego serving.

Christmas parties, canned food drives, dances, programs and concerts for parents and classmates will highlight next two weeks for Cape Girardeau pupils; in what will be shortest Christmas vacation in four years, pupils will be released from classes at end of day Dec. 23 and return on Jan. 3.

50 years ago: Dec. 10, 1951

Final payment on acoustical improvements at Arena Building, completed year ago in October, is authorized by City Council when it meets to approve monthly bills and conduct one other brief item of business; payment is fourth and amounts to $2,481.25; ordinance is passed accepting final apportionment of cost to property owners and accepting repairing and resurfacing of Main Street from Fourth to Roberts; total cost was $1,957.50.

Body of Pvt. Clarence A. Siemers, 21, son of Marie C. Siemers of Cape Girardeau, who was killed in action Aug. 27 only three days after arriving in Korea, will arrive in Cape Girardeau Thursday; funeral will be Sunday at Christ Evangelical Church and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

75 years ago: Dec. 10, 1926

Reports of teams soliciting for annual Salvation Army appeal, which closes Dec. 18, show returns thus far of $1,500, only one fourth of $6,000 that is needed to adequately carry on work of organization; in years past, Girardeans were very liberal in their support of Salvation Army - only organization doing relief work here.

Morehouse - Shoot-to-kill policy has been adopted by merchants and professional men for any person caught robbing or attempting to rob business establishments in Morley; posters have been placed around town bearing words: "$100 Reward for Robber's Dead Body"; this action follows daring daylight hold-up of oil-filling station week ago, when gang of youths robbed station operator of more than $50.
