The 1989 Southeast Missouri District Fair ended more than $43,000 in the red; fair president Don Strohmeyer blames the rainy, cold weather during fair week for the deficit.

Lawyer Kenneth W. Shrum of Marble Hill, Missouri, is among several men nominated to fill a vacant judgeship on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District; the new judge will replace Judge John C. Holstein, who was sworn in Friday as the newest member of the Missouri Supreme Court.

1964

Efforts to provide needy families of Cape Girardeau with a joyous Christmas have begun; the Salvation Army Christmas Bureau opened yesterday, the traditional red kettles manned by Army workers appeared on local streets, and the 13th annual Tree of Lights is dedicated this afternoon on the post office lawn.

Final sewage disposal system bills totaling nearly $175,000 are expected to be paid by the city of Cape Girardeau this week through a combination of a general revenue appropriation and a short-term loan.

1939

The four projects in Cape Girardeau for which the PWA made grants, have been completed at a cost of $636,694; the jobs included construction of the District 6-6A sanitary sewer system, building of Lorimier School and construction of the Teachers College library and men's dormitory.

Signing of contracts calling for the purchase of $245,000 worth of new equipment for the Cape Girardeau electric plant of the Missouri Utilities Co. is announced by H.B. Newman, vice president and general manager in charge of operations here; the new equipment consists of a 5,000-kilowatt Westinghouse turbogenerator and a 1,700-horsepower boiler; installation will necessitate construction of another addition, on the east end, of the present power plant building.

1914

Organizations continue to throw their support behind the idea of a municipal Christmas tree program; the idea is to have a large, decorated tree in Courthouse Park, and on certain nights to have concerts of seasonal music; a petition in support of the program will be presented Monday to the city council.

A legislative investigating committee, composed of one senator and two representatives, is visiting the Normal School; the committee, appointed by the governor, is visiting each state institution in turn.
