Sixteen firms submit proposals to a committee studying a proposed 8,000-acre recreation lake in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties to conduct a feasibility study on the lake project.

WASHINGTON -- Legislation to designate a 1,200-mile, nine-state "Trail of Tears" as a national historic trail is approved by the full House; the measure commemorates the forced removal of the Cherokees from their homeland in the Great Smokey Mountains to Oklahoma.

1962

Representatives from the President's Advisory Committee and the State College Assembly are expected to ask the Cape Girardeau City Council Monday for aid in developing improved lighting and traffic safety installations on and near the campus.

Traffic on the Mississippi River bridge here will be reduced to one lane beginning Monday, when the Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., of Baltimore, Md., begins removal of the bridge's deck; workers will remove the surface, lay steel grid plates, fill them with concrete and then lay a two-inch asphalt cover on the surface.

A crew of men starts work on Cape Girardeau's new factory building on West Independence Street; contractor for the new Superior Electric structure is Fred W. Kurre.

John Ebert, a Central High School graduate and until this year a Teachers College student, is now a gold prospector at Fairbanks, Alaska; in a letter to the newspaper, Ebert said he started his gold search in Death Valley of California and in Nevada; he had no luck there and instead turned his attention to Alaska, where he works for Fairbanks Exploration Co..

The Elks Lodge holds a memorial service in the evening, conducted by Edwin C. Orr of Chillecothe, Mo.

The Missouri Supreme Court handed down a decision Friday affirming the ruling of Judge C.B. Faris, who at a session of the Cape Girardeau County Circuit Court held that the flat tax of 25 cents per acre for organization of the Little River Drainage District was legal; the tax was levied for the purpose of organizing the district and was contested by some of the property owners.
