25 years ago: Dec. 1, 1979

Dr. Pamela Hearn, English department, and Dr. Lina Trompetter, department of philosophy, have collaborated on a proposal for a minor in Women's Studies at Southeast Missouri State University.

As a result of mailing tax bills early, the Cape Girar-deau County Collector's office has already collected $1.3 million of the $9.5 million in taxes owed this year; all the taxes were mailed out by the last part of October.

50 years ago: Dec. 1, 1954

Forty-one Girardeans have entered a total of 70 pieces of artwork in the eighth annual Missourian Art Exhibition to be held this weekend in The Missourian Building, as part of the annual Cape Girardeau Arts Festival.

Robert C. Hyde, Poplar Bluff, Mo., lawyer, has been elected president of the Southeast Missouri Council, Boy Scouts of America; Dr. A.J. Rasche of Cape Girardeau was re-elected council commissioner.

75 years ago: Dec. 1, 1929

December arrives in Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri in true wintry fashion, with three inches of snow covering the ground before the first day is over.

Members of the First Christian Church extend a formal call to the Rev. Robert L. Harrell of Lexington, Ky., as pastor of the church; Harrell, 38, will complete his work for a degree from Transylvania College at Lexington at the close of the calendar year.

100 years ago: Dec. 1, 1904

The census-takers appointed by the city council to take a new count of the city have been at their work a week; in another week, the work will be completed, and it is hoped the result in numbers will surprise residents; it is believed the 1900 number of just over 4,000 will be nearly doubled in recent count.

Fields and Davis have purchased the saloon at 23 Main St. from Brannock and Fields and will conduct the business in the future; it was known as the old Freeman bar.
