Students at Southeast Missouri State University joined hands and sang "We are the World" at the close of an anti-racism rally at noon yesterday in the University Center; representatives of campus organizations spoke to the gathering, and Dumisani Kumalo, a South African journalist, presented a preview of his speech about apartheid.

The city Planning and Zoning Commission has approved plans for a recycling center that would require changing the city's zoning code; the commission recommended the city council amend the code to allow recycling operations in C-2 commercial zones instead of just heavy industrial zones; the change would allow for a recycling operation at 16 rear S. Frederick St.

Mayor W. E. Davis reports the final inspection of Cape Girardeau's new sewage disposal system by state and federal authorities has been tentatively set for Thursday.

THEBES, Ill. -- Fire of undetermined origin strikes the Thebes High School in the evening, but is quickly brought under control by volunteer firemen before extensive damage can result; the gymnasium is about 40 years old and is attached to a school building completed in 1953.

Damage estimated between $1,000 and $1,200 is done to the Christ Episcopal Church rectory, 109 N. Fountain St., when fire guts the attic after originating in the wood shingle roof of the 2 1/2-story frame building at 9 a.m.; the fire is confined by firemen to the attic, but a large volume of water is used; some of this ruined wallpaper in rooms on the second floor.

Looking to the coming political campaign, an executive committee of the Cape Girardeau County Democratic Committee has been appointed to iron out differences among factions; members are chairman Lindsay W. Simmons, Mac Hunter, the Rev. R.M. Talbert, Harry Cracraft, Terry Alt, Mrs. W.W. Ford and Cross Hope.

E.H. McCann, who has been connected with the Cape Girardeau Northern Railroad, has resigned his position to accept one as superintendent of motor power with the San Antonio, Uvalda & Gulf Railroad at Pleasanton, Texas.

The fight among Democrats for the local postmastership is on; Dr. J.C. Vorbeck enters the fray in the morning, circulating his petition among Democrats.
