Tamms, Ill. - Small group of people is continuing efforts to bring halt to logging in Shawnee National Forest; dozen people from Shawnee Defense Fund group hold what they describe as "tree top" news conference from Burner Hill area of forest to relay their message to public.

More than 1,000 Shawnee District Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Explorer Scouts fan out across area to participate in one of nation's largest volunteer collection of food; boys are among more than 4,000 Scouts in Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council who are "Scouting for Food"; boys distribute plastic bags today and next Saturday will collect canned goods that will be used feed hungry in Southeast Missouri.

25 years ago: Nov. 9, 1976

For first time in recent memory, sandbars have appeared in channel of Mississippi River opposite Broadway gate in floodwall; Corps of Engineers dredge, Ockerson, is stationed adjacent to channel, dredging it to normal nine-foot depth; river stage in morning is 7.88 feet.

Enrollment losses of about 100 pupils per year until 1981 are projected for Cape Girardeau Public Schools; what that decline may mean is reduction of staff and less aid from state government, since allocation formulas in part are tied to number of students enrolled.

50 years ago: Nov. 9, 1951

Snowed in at camp eight miles south of Van Buren until Thursday, Fred Whitson, 155 Minnesota, nevertheless brought in his deer; he killed two-point buck Monday with shot from 45-70 rifle as it ran through woods at 85-yard range; eight inches of snow fell in camp area, preventing party of eight hunters, all but Whitson from Campbell, from moving until Thursday.

Fashion show last March results in presentation of modern dressings carriage to Southeast Missouri Hospital by Tuesday Club, women's study group; proceeds from show went to purchase of aluminum and stainless steel cart, which will be put into use on second floor of hospital.

75 years ago: Nov. 9, 1926

Half-million dollar hotel is certainty for Cape Girardeau, if sufficient number of local residents subscribe $45,000 in second mortgage bonds in structure, these bonds to bear 7 percent interest and payable in five years; Hotel Securities Co. of St. Louis will undertake project and hope to have work on new hotel started first of February; it should be ready for occupancy early in 1928.

Benton - Two prisoners saw through iron bars of Scott County Jail early in morning and escape in automobile belonging to Prosecuting Attorney Stephen A. Barton; one of men was awaiting trial in Federal Court in Cape Girardeau on charge of violation of Dyer Act; other was charged with stealing chickens.
