STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- The pilot of a Missouri Highway Patrol helicopter walked a mile and a half to a farm house after the helicopter crashed near here last night; the pilot, Sgt. Bill Cottom, suffered only a cut on his forehead.

A large crowd attends the dedication service of the new Jackson Junior High School and hears the dedicatory address given by Delmar Cobble, a former pupil of Jackson High School; Cobble is the assistant state commissioner of education.

Three local libraries -- Cape Girardeau Public, Riverside Regional and Mississippi County -- have joined the Southeast Missouri Federated Service System board, which promises to improve service to the public; tthe system, the first of its kind in the state, is based on a program set up by the Missouri Library Association.

1939

With the Mississippi River stage at 6.8 feet and still dropping, a new low mark may be reached if the fall continues; the all-time low mark since port warden Lee L. Albert began keeping records here is 6.1 fee.

A formal re-opening of the Walther Funeral Home, 260 N. Middle St., which has been remodeled and redecorated throughout, is planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday; two rooms have been aided to the brick structure, which was built in 1928.

1914

Bishop F.F. Johnson, Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Missouri, preaches the sermon at the morning service at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church, and in the afternoon administers the apostolic rite of confirmation; the sole confirmand is Esta Grissom of Cape Girardeau.

An enthusiastic crowd gathered yesterday afternoon for the opening of the public reading room in the building at the corner of Spanish and Themis streets; the room was attractive with its growing plants, comfortable furniture, piles of magazines and rows of books; Sadie Kent of the Normal School library has organized this library.
