NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Opinions here are divided among farmers, city officials and businessmen on the proposal to straighten the winding Mississippi River adjoining New Madrid by cutting a new channel near Tiptonville, Tenn.; the result would leave this traditional river port city 16 miles from the main channel of the river, but would slice off about 21 navigation miles from the stream.
