The selection of Bob Griffin of Cameron, Mo., as Speaker of the Missouri House will pay dividends for the Southeast Missouri area, says 156th state Rep. Jerry Ford, D-Cape Girardeau; Ford and 155th state Rep. Marvin E. Proffer, D-Jackson, voted for Griffin in the closed-door caucus of House Democrats yesterday.

WASHINGTON -- Newly elected Bill Emerson will be taking a modest pay cut when he joins the House of Representatives in January; according to financial disclosure statements, Emerson earned $58,171 -- salary plus 1978 bonus -- from TRW Inc. in 1979, and $3,750 in consulting fees through his own firm; as a member of Congress, Emerson's salary will be $60,662.

50 years ago: Nov. 8, 1955

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce received assurances yesterday from the city council that a section of the old Cape Girardeau northern right of way in the Nothdurft tract, the chamber's new industrial section east of Arena Park, will be rezoned from light industry to heavy industry.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department has purchased a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle from Ed E. Minor; the department's motorcycle officer is Sgt. Walter Diebold.

75 years ago: Nov. 8, 1930

Dr. William Mayo, famous surgeon of Rochester, Minn., and a party of friends stop at Cape Girardeau in the afternoon on a cruise down the Mississippi River; they visit for a time at various places of interest in the city; the surgeon and his party are traveling in his palatial yacht, the North Star.

Raymond Lange, 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Lange of the Cane Creek community west of Jackson, was seriously injured yesterday, when he fell from the running board of an automobile on which he was riding home from the Cane Creek school; he suffered a fracture of the skull.

100 years ago: Nov. 8, 1905

The county court in Jackson appoints site and building committees for the new courthouse; on the building committee are W.H. Miller, Wilson Kramer and Herman Rabich; the site committee consists of D.A. Glenn, E.H. Engelmann, Charles Kiehne, George H. Barks, George A. Kurre, M.L. Haupt, John L. Kinder, R.W. McNeely and J.H. Miller.

Contractor Henry Ossenkop is building a big, two-story frame business house in Chaffee, Mo.; he has several other contracts there.
