Cape Girardeau fire chief Charles Mills has been honored by the Missouri Association of Mutual Insurance Companies as the Fire Chief of the Year in Missouri.

50 years ago: Nov. 8, 1954

Cape Girardeau's fiscal division has weathered the storm of the usually adverse monetary period and for the first time in three years has been able to scrape through without having to resort to borrowed money to tide it over until taxes make up the deficit.

The city's ordinance setting four license fees for itinerant photographers at a higher level than for local photographers is held invalid by the Missouri Supreme Court.

75 years ago: Nov. 8, 1929

Clarence L. Watkins, a 40-year-old farmer temporarily employed in the Damm rock quarry at Neelys Landing, is instantly killed in the morning when he is struck on the head by falling rock in the quarry.

The State Highway Department magnet, a machine equipped with a device for picking up bolts, nails and other puncture-causing iron from the highways, will be in operation in the vicinity of Cape Girardeau on state roads the first part of next week.

100 years ago: Nov. 8, 1904

Heavy voting is reported at polling places in Cape Girardeau; at 4 p.m., 50 voters had marked their ballots in Haarig; over 500 votes were cast at the Broadway polling place and 475 at the courthouse.

Chairman Ed Hays of the Republican county committee reports that he heard from a few places in the county and that all indications point to a little heavier vote than usual, which is good news for Republicans; at Jackson at noon, the vote was below average, but since that time heavy voting has been going on.
