Work on the new speculation building being constructed on Nash Road is progressing well, says Gene Penzel of Penzel Construction Co., contractor of the project; crews have nearly completed the steel frame for the building and will soon begin putting up the metal siding.

Carrie Suedekum of Cape Girardeau, a longtime member of the Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary, has been named Auxilian of the Year by the Missouri Association of Hospital Auxiliaries.

50 years ago: Nov. 7, 1961

The reroofing project on the four large hangars at municipal airport is about one-third completed after two weeks of work, says James Eaker, the labor contractor; the contract for the job was let by the city Airport Board to Riverside Lumber Co. for about $16,000, and the Eaker firm is a subcontractor.

Expansion of Cape Girardeau's white-way lighting system for five blocks on Independence Street and West End Boulevard was urged by petitions presented to the city council yesterday.

75 years ago: Nov. 7, 1936

City officials say that if plans for the incorporation of west Cape Girardeau at the outskirts of the city go through, then the proposal to establish a fairgrounds and park in that area will be impossible; inasmuch as the proposed village limits embrace part of the proposed park, it would be impossible for the city of Cape Girardeau to vote a bond issue for the establishment of a fairgrounds in another incorporated community.

Back in Cape Girardeau after an absence of 30 years is Ed Steinmeyer, a former jeweler here; Steinmeyer, now a jeweler in Cincinnati, is visiting friends here.

100 years ago: Nov. 7, 1911

Mrs. Steubenrauch, a widow who supports her children by operating a restaurant on Good Hope Street, has complained to the city that her business is hurt by the fact that three saloons in the city are conducting restaurants without having to pay a license; the city councilmen agree with her and have ordered the city collector to collect the regular license from each saloon that continues to operate an eating place.

Bob Reid and Fred Obermiller of Jackson pass through Cape Girardeau on their way down to Oran, Mo., where Reid is hulling peas.
