A newly constructed suspension footbridge is dedicated at the I.R. Kelso Wildlife sanctuary just north of Cape Girardeau at Juden Creek; the bridge, which replaces one that was swept away when the creek flooded eight years ago, was constructed by Navy Seabees from the Naval Reserve Training Center here.

Subsidized taxi service for elderly and handicapped residents of Cape Girardeau is expected to be available beginning Dec. 1; coupons will be sold for $1 each and can be exchanged for a one-way taxi ride.

50 years ago: Nov. 7, 1956

State and national candidates on the Republican ticket commanded substantial majorities in Cape Girardeau County's contested voting yesterday and gained six county offices, while Democrats, making some inroads on Republican domination of county offices, apparently elected four candidates; President Eisenhower swept to a victory of huge proportions over Adlai Stevenson in the county.

The building at 905-907 Broadway, housing the Roth Motor Co., the Pontiac dealer, and owned by F.X. Roth, has undergone a complete remodeling job by sandblasting and tuckpointing the brickwork; an aluminum front also has been placed on a sweeping panel.

75 years ago: Nov. 7, 1931

Asa Hall, cross-country roller skater, arrives in Cape Girardeau in the morning, completing a 381-mile trip over highways from Danville, Ill., where he lives at the Soldiers Home.

Another electric sign is added to Broadway to contribute to the bright lights of the street at night; the sign is installed in the front of the Seymour & Ringo Tire Store, 437 Broadway, a newly established firm.

100 years ago: Nov. 7, 1906

George W. Hutchinson, a resident of New Mexico, is in Cape Girardeau County visiting relatives and friends; Hutchinson was born in this county, but left nearly 50 years ago for the South and West; a few years ago, he patented an arrangement that does away with the breeching on buggy harnesses; no doubt in a short time it will be used on all harnesses made.

The crowd got so big in The Republican newspaper office last night to hear the election returns, that it was necessary to adjourn to the Commercial Club rooms.
