A measure to extend the restaurant gross receipts tax to include convenience stores and other businesses currently not paying the tax is being consider by city officials; a number of restaurant owners have complained that convenience stores and ice cream parlors aren't required to pay the tax.

Widening and straightening of Cape LaCroix Creek is dividing Shawnee Park; a foot bridge that linked soccer fields on both sides of the creek has been taken down, and the Wilson Road bridge over the creek is to be removed within the next few weeks.

Cape Girardeau police raided the El Morocco Club in South Cape Girardeau on Saturday night in connection with the beating of an officer while he was attempting to arrest a woman for peace disturbance Friday night; five people were arrested in raid.

After Saturday night's disposal of Warrensburg 29-0, State College needs only a road triumph over the winless Maryville this Saturday afternoon to regain the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association football championship; coach Kenneth Knox's Indians won the title in 1955, 1957, 1958 and 1959.

Formation of a new high school football conference in Southeast Missouri may make it hard for Central High to schedule gridiron games in seasons to come; first indication from the loop comes with the announcement that Perryville, Mo., long a foe of the Tigers, won't be on its 1938 card due to the league; practically every prep team in the area has joined the league, except Central.

The city council has renewed a contract with J.W. Lincoln for the removal of garbage from the city for six months.

Last night's city council meeting was an interesting one, with most of the time taken up in lambasting the police for neglect of duty; an exception to the general blame was Councilman Clem B. Hoeller's defense of officer Jeff Hutson of the Haarig beat.

Everyone is invited to gather at The Republican office this evening, where election returns will be posted in the window as they come in; a special telegraph and telephone service has been installed, and expert operators will be in charge.
