Larry H. Ferrell and Michael A. Price were sworn in as assistant U.S. attorneys during ceremony yesterday; presiding at hour-long ceremony and administering oats was U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh; Ferrell and Price will work out of U.S. attorney's office at 325 Broadway.

Mother Nature didn't just break record low temperature yesterday morning, she smashed it; dome of arctic air that settled in over Midwest late Sunday and early yesterday broke many record low temperatures for date; at Municipal Airport, mercury sank to 16 degrees, breaking 40-year-old record low of 21 degrees.

25 years ago: Nov. 5, 1976

Bill Prost of Caruthersville was named Southeast Missouri State University's first Man of the Year yesterday during Homecoming dance at Arena Building; Homecoming Queen crown goes to Janet Davis of Sikeston.

David Awbrey, planner with Missouri Department of Transportation, has been in Cape Girardeau this week doing preliminary work on bus service study for city; Awbrey and city administrative assistant, Cecelia Sonderman, have met with number of groups to discuss transportation needs; Cape Girardeau has been without public bus service since 1969.

50 years ago: Nov. 5, 1951

Deaths of two Southeast Missouri men in Korea are reported on casualty lists by Department of Defense; men are Cpl. Roman A. Olinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Olinger of Near Campbell, who was killed in action in Korea, and Pfc. Jack A. Chaney, son of Vernon A. Chaney of near Poplar Bluff, who died of wounds.

Increase in water rates will be sought by Missouri Utilities Co. and, if fire hydrant expansion program recommended by Missouri Inspection Bureau and ordered by city is completed, increase will be much greater; this is information provided City Council by H.B. Newman, president of utilities firm, in reply to city order made Sept. 19 ordering 158 fire hydrants placed to complete fire improvement program initiated almost two years ago.

75 years ago: Nov. 5, 1926

Application of Cape Girardeau Bridge Co. for formal permit to construct traffic bridge across Mississippi River is in hands of War Department, with final decision up to department engineers and Secretary of War Dwight F. Davis; hearing was held yesterday in St. Louis before Major John C. Gotwals, district engineer for department; of particular interest at hearing was conflicting opinions of river men as to effect new bridge will have on river navigation.

Official count of votes cast in Tuesdays election fails to make any material changes in results as announced in unofficial count; it shows election of four Democrats and seven Republicans to county offices.- Sharon K. Sanders
