Motorists who normally use the 1700 block of Independence Street to get to work have to find a different way in the morning; a break in an underground Union Electric Co. natural gas line at Independence Street and Caruthers Avenue forces police to close off the area to traffic for about seven hours.

MORLEY, Mo. -- Residents here are voicing strong opposition to a proposed new Scott County landfill, claiming it might bury the town in environmental woes; the Morley City Council is opposing the Scott County Commission's plan to open a 28-acre landfill just east of the present landfill, about a mile and a half from Morley.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Bollinger County this year met the assessed valuation requirement to advance from a fourth to a third class county, but apparently won't be permitted the change for another two years; state statutes declare that a county can't be changed in classification until the fiscal year after the next general election after the assessed requirements have been certified by the State Tax Commission.

The county court has nominated Frank Stoffregen of Delta, Martin Koenig of Jackson and Hubert Bollinger of Daisy to administer the county's Johnson grass program voted into effect Nov. 6.

1937

Thomas D. Hines, 75, a lawyer at Jackson 51 years and one of the best known members of the legal profession in Southeast Missouri, dies at his home; he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morton Hines.

Cape Girardeau patrolman Ed W. Barenkamp has been selected to study at the annual G-man school in Washington, D.C.; the course will be conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Judge R.G. Ranney adjourns Common Pleas Court at noon in honor of the memory of Judge W.G. Schneider, who died in Jackson on Thursday evening; Ranney was born and raised near the home of Schneider.

The A.F. Maurer carriage and blacksmith shop on Good Hope Street has installed some new electric power machinery, which allows repairs to be made much faster.
