Jackson - High winds, gusting up to 60 miles per hour, ripped through Jackson last night causing damage to many businesses and homes; no injuries were reported; same weather front spawned tornado near Springfield that tore through neighborhoods and across a highway, killing two people and injuring at least 24 others.
Salvation Army Tree of Lights campaign, used to provide food, toys and clothing to needy families, will hopefully raise $100,000; last year, $85,000 was raised, helping more than 3,000 individuals at Christmas time, including children and nursing home patients.

Visual landing aid system for pilots has been approved by Federal Aviation Administration for installation at Municipal Airport; system of lights will be placed at end of runway to help pilots coming in on instruments to make early visual sighting of runway.
Lagoon in Capaha Park is frozen over in morning in second successive day of frigid temperatures, and ducks on pond seem puzzled by changed environment; a few make messy landings, skidding in undignified poses as they hit slick surface.
50 years ago: Nov. 30, 1951
Dr. George O. Farrar, dentist who came here from Kansas City where he had practiced for several years, will open office Monday in First National Bank Building; he and his wife and young son, George Michael, are living temporarily with Mr. and Mrs. G.T. Hutson, 2020 Thilenius; Dr. Farrar is brother of Mrs. Hutson, former Helen Farrar.
Air Force recently leased facilities at Dexter, Gideon and Sikeston for training of Malden Air Force Base students; John Godwin of Cape Central Airways says Cape Girardeau field hasn't received any inquiries from government concerning use of municipal airport for training pilots; he says Cape Girardeau's 100-foot-wide paved runways possibly are too narrow and ground along side them too soft to be suitable for use by T-6 training craft.
75 years ago: Nov. 30, 1926
Cape Girardeau County Home for first time in history is self-sustaining, report of County Welfare Board, filed with County Court, shows; under efficient management of Supt. and Mrs. Charles J. Randol, County Home the past year, instead of being burden on taxpayers, actually paid its way in products grown on farm; total expenditures for farm, where county's indigent poor are housed, amounted to $2,793.49; total receipts, including what produce was sold and estimating value of what was used and is now on hand, totaled $2,811.98.
City Commissioner Al Meystedt says city has stopped dumping of refuse in Mississippi River at point in South Cape Girardeau located by the city and that another dumping place must be found.- Sharon K. Sanders
