25 years ago: Nov. 3, 1984

Crowds line Broadway for the annual Southeast Missouri State University Homecoming parade; yesterday, at a banquet at the University Center, Dr. Charles E. Sharp, a faculty member in Southeast's Department of History, and Dr. Robert E. Kelly, a Southeast graduate who teaches theoretical physics at the University of Missouri, were presented Faculty Merit Award citations.

Cape Girardeau County Court has sent five bridge design contracts to the Missouri Highway Department for funding approval under the federal Off-Systems Bridge Replacement Program; they are among 10 for which the county is seeking the federal replacement funding.

50 years ago: Nov. 3, 1959

B.F. Hinkle, an abstractor at Nevada, Mo., is named to succeed Charles W. Boutin of Cape Girardeau as a member of the Missouri Park Board; it is understood that Gov. James T. Blair wishes to have men on the board who are younger than 70; Boutin is 74.

About 3,000 feet of Bertling Street is being paved from Sprigg Street west to near Perry Avenue; the paved width of the street will be 36 feet; Superior Concretors of Cape Girardeau is the contractor.

75 years ago: Nov. 3, 1934

Captured by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur F. Bland who hold him at bay with an unloaded shotgun until police arrive, a man attempting to burglarize the Gately Clothing Store, 313 Broadway, is in the city jail facing state charges of burglary and larceny; the Blands live across the street from the store and heard the crash of breaking glass.

Making their sixth straight triumph the most decisive of all, the State College Indians distributed four touchdowns over as many periods to thrash the Bears of Springfield Teachers College at Houck Stadium on Friday night, 29-7.

100 years ago: Nov. 3, 1909

The Roth Tobacco factory in Cape Girardeau has begun manufacturing granulated smoking tobacco; the delightful smoke bears the name "Our Favorite."

Edward F. Regenhardt goes over to Jackson in the morning on his way to Knob Lick, Mo., to inspect the granite blocks to be used in paving Broadway hill in Cape Girardeau.
