Jackson - County Clerk Rodney Miller is anticipating record number of voters could go to polls today in Cape Girardeau County; but because this will be one of longest ballots ever, Miller is urging voters to come to polls prepared, to avoid long lines; biggest turnout ever in county was in 1984, when 25,302 people cast votes.

New $184,000 fire truck, which will replace 1967 American La France engine, arrived in Cape Girardeau yesterday; new truck is 1992 Pierce Arrow pumper fire engine and will be stationed at Fire Station No. 2 in about two to three days; 1967 truck is one of several aging fire trucks scheduled to be retired as part of five-year upgrade of department's fleet of fire-fighting equipment.

25 years ago: Nov. 3, 1977

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Philip T. Ayers will become first assistant to Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Bradshaw Smith Nov. 14, Smith announces; Marshal Shain Jr., who became assistant prosecutor in October, will remain on staff, giving prosecutor two full-time assistants.

Almost half of employees at Chaffee's Florsheim Shoe Co. refuse to cross picket lines set up at plant in morning by employees of new Florsheim plant in Cape Girardeau; of 325 employees at Chaffee plant, 140 don't report for work, but none of Chaffee workers join 10 or so Cape Girardeau employees on picket lines.

50 years ago: Nov. 3, 1952

Cpl. Doyle Schatz, 25, of Bell City, formerly of Cape Girardeau, was killed in fighting in Korea Oct. 14, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Shatz of Route 1, Bell City have been notified; with Co. B, 31st Infantry Regiment, Schatz had been in front line since almost time he went overseas in December 1951.

State College Indians will wrap up season in MIAA Conference with game to be played Saturday against Bears at Springfield; Bears have yet to win conference game in four played, while Indians are 2-2; Saturday night at Houck Stadium, locals rolled to 61-0 victory over underdog Bethel College Wildcats of McKenzie, Tenn.

75 years ago: Nov. 3, 1927

Hearing to determine permanent location of Highway 61 through Scott and New Madrid counties won't be held by State Highway Commission as scheduled; Chief Engineer T.H. Cutler says it will be impossible to check surveys and plans for proposed east and west routes in time to give each route association copies of reports, as had been promised.

Local post of American Legion has been presented with original cross from grave of Louis K. Juden in France; post, which bears name of Juden, received gift from W.W. Juden, father of Louis, during impressive ceremony Wednesday night; cross was enclosed in attractive oak frame; while it was unveiled, O.G. Edwards blew "Taps" in memory of fallen soldier.
