10 years ago: Nov. 28, 1992

The Missourian publishes first of five Saturday editions; with edition, newspaper begins five-week trial with Saturday publications; The Missourian is delivered to subscribers and is available at newsstands at regular weekday price.

Although trip is quite expensive, Richie Phillips jumped at chance to play baseball overseas; Phillips, standout pitcher last summer for Cape Girardeau Kohlfeld Capahas, will be part of International Athletic Foundation International Baseball Team that will compete in President's Cup Baseball Tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5.

25 years ago: Nov. 28, 1977

Salt supplies that should be sufficient to open up streets in Cape Girardeau after large snow or ice storm have been laid in by city in preparation for winter ahead; L.W. McDowell, superintendent of public works, says that 20 tons of salt have been stockpiled; additional 40 tons is expected to be delivered this week.

Nationwide coal strike that appears likely for Dec. 6 will have little impact on Southeast Missouri State University, city's largest user of coal in its power and heat plant.

50 years ago: Nov. 28, 1952

Winter's first grip of season continues tight on Cape Girardeau, following Thanksgiving Day that saw temperatures sink to below freezing mark; however, unlike situation elsewhere in Midwest, where snow brought heavy damage, day here was clear and bright; mercury slumps to 16 degrees early this morning, lowest of the cold period.

Poplar Bluff's smooth-running Mules scored in three of four quarters, added two of extra points, and mustered stout defense to hand Central High Tigers 20-0 setback in annual Thanksgiving Day game played at Bluff.

75 years ago: Nov. 28, 1927

Three of nine piers of Cape Girardeau traffic bridge across Mississippi River are virtually completed, fourth is nearing completion, and large part of first steel work has been erected; during past few days, cofferdam of Pier 5 has been pumped out, piling has been cut off, and work on pier shaft has begun.

Morehouse -- Status of permanent location of federal Highway 61 through Scott and New Madrid counties remains unchanged, following failure of committee from West Route Association to obtain postponement of hearing set for next Friday from Col. C.D. Matthews, chairman of State Highway Commission; Matthews refuses to agree to postponement unless Gov. Sam A. Baker announces before Friday the appointment of new commissioner to succeed Hugh Stephens, whose term ends Thursday.
