50 years ago: Nov. 27, 1953

TAMMS, Ill. -- Tamms Community High School, eight miles east of Gale, is destroyed by fire in morning; carpenter, Clarence Gammon, 70, of Tamms, is trapped on third floor and is seriously burned before sliding down chute-type fire escape to safety.

Five-foot crosses, composed of and illuminated with snow-white neon tubing on all four sides, have been installed on bell tower of Trinity Lutheran Church.

75 years ago: Nov. 27, 1928

Girardeans seem to be turning their backs on turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner; one merchant reports having sold only six birds so far, in contrast to last year when he sold 15, and year before when he sold 50.

Cape Girardeau Police Department has recovered all but one of 22 automobiles which have been stolen here this year and in addition has recovered six motor cars which were stolen elsewhere.
