Heavy thunderstorms in the morning hamper cleanup operations along the Mississippi River south of Commerce, Mo., following a barge accident Sunday in which about 300,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled into the river; while the weather hampers the Coast Guard's efforts, it does help "flush" the oil from the area.

Gary Bunting designed the new logo for the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, featuring a riverboat wheel symbolizing the city's river heritage; his design was selected from among 13 entries received in the department's logo contest.

50 years ago: Nov. 26, 1960

Robert Vogelsang, one of the organizers of Farmers and Merchants Bank and a member of its board of directors for 50 years until his retirement in 1955, died Friday at age 88.

The new racing vehicle, go-carts manufactured in Cape Girardeau, participated this week in races at Nassau, the Bahamas, and came off with honors at the Nassau Grand Prix International World Championship; entered from Cape Girardeau were three Cape-Carts made by the Cape Mfg. Co., a subsidiary of the Erlbacher organization.

75 years ago: Nov. 26, 1935

BENTON, Mo. -- Denver Wright may be having no luck finding a wolf, but Alfred Halter, 20-year-old quail hunter, bumped into one while hunting yesterday and promptly killed it with a charge from his shotgun loaded with light shot, at a range of 20 feet; Halter shot the 35-pound animal on the Ben Adams farm.

The Works Progress Administration project of clearing Happy Hollow, the big ravine-like valley between South Frederick and South Fountain streets and just south of the Missouri Pacific Railroad yards, may revive efforts to develop the area and extend Merriwether Street between Fountain and Frederick streets.

100 years ago: Nov. 26, 1910

By 7 a.m., the advance guard of the young lady taggers is busy, and within an hour or two nearly everyone on the streets is sporting a bright yellow circular tag denoting that he had donated; money raised in this manner will benefit the Provident Association.

Ben Juden, clerk at the Riverview Hotel, has yet to return from St. Louis, where he followed some theatrical people who were financially embarrassed.
