1987

City manager Gary A. Eide is resigning to take a position as city manager of Salem, Ore.; formal announcements are scheduled to be made later today at simultaneous press conferences here and in Salem; Eide will begin his new duties in Salem on Jan. 4.

A planned commission on efficiency in city government is already stirring up debate among Cape Girardeau City Council members; Mayor Gene Rhodes charges that the commission, whose members have yet to be appointed, is intended to promote an unnamed councilman's "personal political agenda."

1962

Edgar E. Blake, the superintendent of the Missouri Baptist Children's Home at Bridgeton, is the guest speaker at the evening worship hour at the First Baptist Church; he has been with the home 14 years.

Southeast Missouri State College of Cape Girardeau, football champions of the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association, placed two men on the MIAA All-Conference first team: David Ball, outstanding offensive center, and Hal Lane, highly talented quarterback.

1937

Thanksgiving Day. Business is at a standstill in Cape Girardeau as residents turn to the annual observance of Thanksgiving; a religious service sponsored by Protestant churches of the city is held in the morning at the Presbyterian Church.

For the first time in history, the banner of the football championship of the MIAA Conference is claimed by the Teachers College Indians; the locals claim the crown at Houck Field Stadium before a crowd of 3,000 by swatting the Missouri Miners of Rolla, 16-6; the Indians finish the season the only unbeaten college football team in Missouri.

1912

After several delays in St. Louis, aviator Tony Jannus in his Benoist hydroplane finally got under way and is making his way to Cape Girardeau, giving exhibitions at Ste. Genevieve, Chester and Grand Tower; with Jannus is William H. Trefts, a moving picture artist, who will film the Cape Girardeau flights.

W.C. Peterson is moving his household goods from Freeburg, Ill., to Cape Girardeau; he and his family will make their home at 710 N. Spanish St.
